THE 144,000 THEIR TRIUMPHS AND REWARD STUDIES IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION

In the year 1927, a prominent member of the Seventh-day Adventist church (Taylor Bunch) wrote an article about two living classes of saints mentioned in the book of Revelation–the “144,000” (Rev. 7:4), and the “great multitude” (Rev. 7:9). It was printed in a very important religious magazine of the church–SIGNS OF THE TIMES, which had many articles written by Sis. E. G. White. He wrote that the “144,000” are the first class of saints (whose type is Elijah–P. K. 227); and that they will gather in the second class, the “great multitude” (whose type is Enoch–P. P. 89). This means that both classes are saints who will be alive at Christ’s second advent, and who will be translated to heaven without tasting of death (as was Enoch and Elijah).  And since this doctrine of the Seventh-day Adventist church was true in 1927; then it it still true today.

Surely the Lord is preparing His people for the “Loud Cry” which will be given as soon as the 144,000 and with them — the “firstfruits” — are sealed and which truth is also brought to our attention in “The Signs of the Times” of May, 1927.

“It has been said by some that it matters not whether one understands the subject of the 144,000 or not, so long as he does right. This is certainly true if we DO RIGHT, but how do we know whether we do right or not, except we understand Bible doctrines? How can we know whether we keep the right Sabbath, or belong to the right church, unless we understand that doctrine? Why is it important to understand Daniel 7, the beast and his image, and many other Bible prophecies? If we do not understand the subject of the 144,000, we may not be sealed, for it would be worthless to understand it after the sealing, just as it would be of no value to understand the beast and his image after his work on earth is finished.”

“The angel’s message of Revelation 7–the angel ascending from the east–is as important as the first, second, and third angel’s messages of Rev. 14:6-11. It must be understood and given to the people at the right time, as also the mighty angel of Rev. 18:1. The loud cry must come at a given time.”

We shall endeavor to bring enough evidence in this study to show that the 144,000 is come from Seventh-day Adventist church (Modern Israel). For this reason I am penning these special lines to you. And since Inspiration’s counsel is, “study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of Truth” (2 Tim. 2:15), you positively know that this is what God wants you to do.

REVELATION 7:1-4

1 “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.”

REVIEW:

a. Four symbolic winds are being held by four angels.
b. An angel ascends from the east with the seal of God.
c. The winds cannot be let loose until the 144,000 are sealed.
d. The 144,000 and with them are a very special company.

When Will The 144,000 Be Sealed?

Read: Revelation 7:1-3

a. The 144,000 will be sealed BEFORE the blowing of the winds
b. Therefore, the winds must be very important or very critical for us to understand because before the winds will be let loosed, the 144,000 and with them must be sealed first.

What Do The Winds Symbolize?

Read: 5T 152

“The time is coming when we cannot sell at any price. The decree will soon go forth prohibiting men to buy or sell of any man save him that hath the mark of the beast. We near having this realized in California a short time since; but this was only the threatening of the blowing of the four winds. As yet they are held by the four angels. We are not just ready. There is a work yet to be done, and then the angels will be bidden to let go, that the four winds may blow upon the earth. That will be a decisive time for God’s children, a time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation.” Testimonies, Vol. 5. P. 152.

a. Winds in the Bible reveal trouble, strife and wars (GC 440). However, in Rev. 7 these winds reveal trouble against the church not nation against nation—not wars.
b. Here we are told that the symbolic winds represent the “time of trouble such as never was” (Dan. 12:1). The “Mark of the Beast” decree or the “Sunday-Blue Laws.”

Thus, the 144,000 and with them have to be sealed before the mark of the beast. Since the “mark of the beast decree is just ahead of us, this indicates that the 144,000 and with them are being sealed today. (See also Bible Commentary 7A, p 976.2).

“This is the test that the people of God must have before they are sealed. All who proved their loyalty to God by observing His law, and refusing to accept a spurious sabbath, will rank under the banner of the Lord God Jehovah, and will receive the seal of the living God. Those who yield the truth of heavenly origin and accept the Sunday sabbath, will receive the mark of the beast (Letter 11, 1890).” {7BC 976.3}

c. The Mark of the Beast will be formed and exist before the final close of probation. These winds in Rev. 7 could not symbolize wars seeing that we have always had wars (for example, World War I and II) and yet the 144,000 are not yet sealed. Therefore, these winds represent a unique strife or trouble, that is designed to interfere with the churches mission. It does not indicate a clash of nation against nation only. It must be held, lest it hurt the people of God. This shows that the winds are religious-political in nature.

Where Are The 144,000 To Be Found?

Read: Revelation 7:4

“And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.”

a. They are sealed from the tribes of Israel. However, this could not be ancient Israel, seeing that we are dealing with the time just prior to the mark of the beast—our time.
b. The 144,000 must therefore be found in modern Israel —The SDA Church. 9T 164

“In order to be purified and to remain pure, Seventh-day Adventists must have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and in their homes. The Lord has given me light that when the Israel of today humble themselves before Him, and cleanse the soul-temple from all defilement, He will hear their prayers in behalf of the sick and will bless in the use of His remedies for disease. When in faith the human agent does all he can to combat disease, using the simple methods of treatment that God has provided, his efforts will be blessed of God.” 9T 164.

“These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, [being] the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.” Revelation 14:4.

a. Here the 144,000 are said not to be defiled with women (churches of the world) because they are virgins (professing a pure faith—See COL 406). In other words, the 144,000 are found in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

“They are pure as virgins,–free from defilement with apostate churches, symbolized in the texts as women.” Review and Herald, Feb. 26, 1889 p. 137.
Further proof: Jer. 6:2, 3:14; GC 381:1; Jer. 31:4; Eph. 5:24, 25.

Is This Number (144,000) Symbolic Or Literal?

a. Read: Rev. 7:4. John clearly heard the number.

“And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.” Revelation 7:4.

b. Read: Early Writing p.15 Ellen White clearly saw the number.

“The living saints, 144,000 in number,…” Early Writings 15.

c. Read: Rev. 7:5-9 God delineates specifically 12,000 from each tribe. But in verse 9, John saw an innumerable company. The comparison shows that one is a numbered company (144,000), the other unnumbered. Hence, the number of the 144,000 as to be literal, not symbolic. However, the 144,000 is literal number from the tribe of the children of Israel but not only 144,000 who received the seal of the living God. Example: The 12 disciples of Jesus Christ’s, which is literal number but not only the 12 disciples who believe (settled) that Jesus Christ is the Messiah the only begotten son of God in the first Advent of Jesus. (12 denote government, 12 tribes, 12 apostles, 12,000 in every tribe of the children of Israel the 144,000).

Therefore the Type is 12 disciples and with them, and the Antitype are 12,000 in every tribe of the children of Israel the 144,000 and with them.

How Are They Sealed?

“(Revelation 7:2.) Seal Is a Settling Into Truth—Just as soon as the people of God are sealed in their foreheads—it is not any seal or mark that can be seen, but a settling into the truth, both intellectually and spiritually, so they cannot be moved—just as soon as God’s people are sealed and prepared for the shaking, it will come.” (Manuscript 173, 1902). {4BC 1161.6}

A. The 144,000 and with them are sealed because they are settled into the truth especially the truth of the Judgment for the living, both Intellectually and spiritually. See or read: TM 445.2

Read: TM 445.2

“This sealing of the servants of God is the same that was shown to Ezekiel in vision. John also had been a witness of this most startling revelation.” TM 445.2

a. Here we see that the sealing of the 144,000 is also to be found somewhere in the book of Ezekiel. The only such chapter where this prophet gives an account of a sealing, is the NINTH. Therefore, John the Revelator and Ezekiel saw the sealing of the 144,000.

Read: Ezekiel 9:1-11

9:1 He cried also in mine ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause them that have charge over the city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand.
9:2 And, behold, six men came from the way of the higher gate, which lieth toward the north, and every man a slaughter weapon in his hand; and one man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side: and they went in, and stood beside the brasen altar.

a. Six men or angels came from Heaven (higher gate towards the north). See Isa. 14:13;Ps. 48:1, 2.
b. One was a marking angel.
c. Angels are sometimes called men. (See Dan. 9:21; DA 99)

“Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.” Daniel 9:21.

“The words of the angel, “I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God,” show that he holds a position of high honor in the heavenly courts.” Desire of Ages p.99.

Ezekiel 9:3-6 “And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub, whereupon he was, to the threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the writer’s inkhorn by his side; 4 And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. 5 And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: 6 Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.

d. God told the marking angel to seal or mark only those who sigh and cry for the evils in Jerusalem—the church.
e. God then commanded the other five other angels to follow the marking angel and slay.
f. He also instructed them to begin the destruction with the church (sanctuary) (1 Pet. 4:17) and with the ancient men (leaders).

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?” 1 Peter 4:17.

Ezekiel 9:7-10 And he said unto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city. 8 And it came to pass, while they were slaying them, and I was left, that I fell upon my face, and cried, and said, Ah Lord GOD! Wilt thou destroy all the residue of Israel in thy pouring out of thy fury upon Jerusalem? 9 Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath forsaken the earth, and the LORD seeth not. 10 And as for me also, mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will recompense their way upon their head.

g. God is not to have mercy because of the general attitude of the leaders and members. They are acting as if “the Lord will not do good or evil”—not concerned.

Ezekiel 9:11 And, behold, the man clothed with linen, which had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as thou hast commanded me.

Read: 3T 266,267

“The true people of God, who have the spirit of the work of the Lord and the salvation of souls at heart, will ever view sin in its real, sinful character. They will always be on the side of faithful and plain dealing with sins which easily beset the people of God. Especially in the closing work for the church, in the sealing time of the one hundred and forty-four thousand who are to stand without fault before the throne of God, will they feel most deeply the wrongs of God’s professed people. This is forcibly set forth by the prophet’s illustration of the last work under the figure of the men each having a slaughter weapon in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side. “And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.”

“Who are standing in the counsel of God at this time? Is it those who virtually excuse wrongs among the professed people of God and who murmur in their hearts, if not openly, against those who would reprove sin? Is it those who take their stand against them and sympathize with those who commit wrong? No, indeed! Unless they repent, and leave the work of Satan in oppressing those who have the burden of the work and in holding up the hands of sinners in Zion, they will never receive the mark of God’s sealing approval. They will fall in the general destruction of the wicked, represented by the work of the five men bearing slaughter weapons. Mark this point with care: Those who receive the pure mark of truth, wrought in them by the power of the Holy Ghost, represented by a mark by the man in linen, are those “that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done” in the church. Their love for purity and the honor and glory of God is such, and they have so clear a view of the exceeding sinfulness of sin, that they are represented as being in agony, even sighing and crying. Read the ninth chapter of Ezekiel.”{3T 267.1}

a. That the true people of God are those who recognize sin in the church, stay aloof from it, and speak out against its sins.
b. Closing work for the church is the sealing of the 144,000.
c. This work of the sealing of the 144,000 is forcibly set forth by the prophet Ezekiel. He saw five men (angels) with slaughter weapons and the sixth with a writer’s inkhorn.
d. Only those who sigh and cry for the wrongs in the church receive the seal.
e. The servant of the Lord under Inspiration tells us to read Ezekiel chapter Nine.

Is This A Literal Slaughter?

a. There is no such thing as a spiritual slaughter is recorded anywhere in Scripture. Nobody knows what a spiritual slaughter is.
b. Verse 7, says “fills the court with the slain.”—Ezekiel saw real corpses.
c. Read: Manuscript Releases Vol. 1 p. 260 – will be literally fulfilled.

“Study the 9th chapter of Ezekiel. These words will be literally fulfilled;” 1MR 260.2

d. Read: 1888 Materials p. 1303 – The slaughter of Ezekiel 9 will be fulfilled to the letter.

e. Read: 1T 190 – The Lord is whetting His sword in heaven to cut them down.

“Many, I saw, were flattering themselves that they were good Christians, who have not a single ray of light from Jesus. They know not what it is to be renewed by the grace of God. They have no living experience for themselves in the things of God. And I saw that the Lord was whetting His sword in heaven to cut them down. Oh, that every lukewarm professor could realize the clean work that God is about to make among His professed people! Dear friends, do not deceive yourselves concerning your condition. You cannot deceive God. Says the True Witness: “I know thy works.” {1T 189.2}

f. Therefore, EZEKIEL 9 IS LITERAL AND IT WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE SDA CHURCH, OUR CHURCH.

Read: 5T 211

“The class who do not feel grieved over their own spiritual declension, nor mourn over the sins of others, will be left without the seal of God. The Lord commissions His messengers, the men with slaughtering weapons in their hands: “Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.”

“Here we see that the church–the Lord’s sanctuary–was the first to feel the stroke of the wrath of God. The ancient men, those to whom God had given great light and who had stood as guardians of the spiritual interests of the people, had betrayed their trust. They had taken the position that we need not look for miracles and the marked manifestation of God’s power as in former days. Times have changed. These words strengthen their unbelief, and they say: The Lord will not do good, neither will He do evil. He is too merciful to visit His people in judgment. Thus “Peace and safety” is the cry from men who will never again lift up their voice like a trumpet to show God’s people their transgressions and the house of Jacob their sins. These dumb dogs that would not bark are the ones who feel the just vengeance of an offended God. Men, maidens, and little children all perish together.” 5T 211

a. Those who do not mourn over their own sins (sigh) or warn others (cry) will not receive the seal.
b. The church is the first to feel God’s wrath (literally).
c. The ancient men are the leaders.
d. The leaders have been unfaithful-betrayed their trust. They do not warn the members of the coming doom. They do not believe God will bring judgment on His people. They think that God is too merciful.
e. Because they have failed as faithful leaders, they will never preach again.
f. They are likened to dumb dogs (ministers are symbolized in scripture by dogs) because they are supposed to warn the members of danger. See Isa. 56:10.

Are the 144,000 to taste death?

Read: Early Writings p.15 “The living saints, 144,000 in number,…”
Here we are told that the 144,000 are “living saints” – not resurrected saints.
Once again we see that the 144,000 are called living saints.

Furthermore, they are shown by Inspiration that the 144,000 lived through all the major end-time events and at last translated at our Lord’s second advent. Clearly, then they never taste death.

Are the 144,000 only will not taste death and sealed?

“Let us strive with all the power God has given us, to be among the 144,000.” (Review and Herald, March 9, 1905)

merriam-webster dictionary the word “among” is “in company of or association with”

First, let it be understood that the subject of those saints who will be saved along “with” the 144,000 is not a new doctrine. It was dealt with briefly by Sis. E.G. White, the prophetess (1 S.M 34:5) of the Seventh-day Adventist church. In her book entitled, Early Writings, she spoke of this subject when she wrote about a world she visited in a vision she had, and what her attending angel told her: “I begged of my attending angel to let me remain in that place. I could not bear the thought of coming back to this dark world again. Then the angel said, ‘You must go back, and if you are faithful, you, with the 144,000 shall have the privilege of visiting all the worlds and viewing the handiwork of God.'”–Early Writings, pg. 40:0

a. “Remember, too, that you are candidates for the first fruits, to be either one with, or one of the 144,000, that you are to be without guile in your mouths (Rev. 14:5).”

b. “All that are found members of the church up to the fulfillment of Ezekiel Nine will either receive the seal and be a part of or with the 144,000, or else be left without the seal and fall under the ‘slaughter weapons’ of the ‘five angels’.”

Revelation 7:4 “And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.”

a. Merriam Webster Dictionary the word “THE” is Definite article and the word “A” or “AN” is indefinite article. Why we need to consider the word “THE” and “A or AN”? Because “heaven and earth will pass away, but not one jot or little of the word of God will fail. It will endure forever.” Review and Herald, June 12, 1900.

b. The word “the number” is literal number or definite number from genealogical record or lineage tribes of the children of Israel. However, the 144,000 from the tribes of the children of Israel is not only living saints from the church who received the seal of the living God because of the word “AN” (indefinite article) “and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.” Revelation 7:4. Remember the Church is compose of the people, a olive tree(all the tribes of the children of Israel) and wild olive tree(Gentile grafted) “…being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;” (Romans 11:17).

“Furthermore, though one be of Gentile blood, if he truly accepts Christ he by his spiritual birth becomes of the seed of Abraham for says Inspiration, “If ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Gal. 3:29.”

The number of the 144,000 as to be literal, not symbolic. However, the 144,000 is literal number from the tribe of the children of Israel but not only 144,000 who received the seal of the living God.

Example: The 12 disciples of Jesus Christ’s, which is literal number but not only the 12 disciples who believe (settled) that Jesus Christ is the Messiah{present truth} the only begotten son of God in the first Advent of Jesus. (12 denote government, 12 tribes, 12 apostles, 12,000 in every tribe of the children of Israel the 144,000).

Therefore the Type is 12 disciples and with them, and the Antitype are 12,000 in every tribe of the children of Israel the 144,000 and with them.

“When type should meet anti-type.” The Signs of the Times April 22, 1880 by E.G White.

“One of the chief reasons why confusion arises among Bible students is because they do not entirely depend on the Biblical expression of the words. They think themselves wiser than the prophets who were inspired with the Spirit of God, and thus wish to correct the words and meaning of the Holy Bible! Hence finite mortals have attempted to rectify and correct the Infinite One, whose wisdom, power, and vision is unsearchable! Though they know their interpretation of a text is not altogether in harmony with the whole tenor of the book and law, they see no injury, and fear not God. And when the fact is revealed they refuse to exchange error for truth because it contradicts their false theology. We invite the earnest attention of the reader upon this subject and that he take notice of the wonderful harmony of the Scriptures and the great wisdom used in them.”

Type and Antitype

“Elijah was a type of the saints who will be living on the earth at the time of the second advent of Christ and who will be ‘changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump,’ WITHOUT TASTING OF DEATH. 1 Corinthians 15:51,52”- Prophets and Kings p.227.

a. The Type

I. Here we see that Elijah is a type of the group of saints who will not taste death.
II. Elijah was an Israelite (1 Kings 17:1)
III. He wore a long mantle (Kings 2:8,14)

1 Kings 17:1 “And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

2 Kings 2:8,14 “And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.”
14 “And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.”

b. The Antitype

I. The 144,00 are “living saints” and will be translated without tasting death.
II. They are from Israel.
III. They will also wore long mantles – see EW 16-17 Life Sketches pp. 66,67.
IV. The 144,000 will never taste death.

“Here on the sea of glass the 144,000 stood in a perfect square. Some of them had very bright crowns, others not so bright. Some crowns appeared heavy with stars, while others had but few. All were perfectly satisfied with their crowns. And they were all clothed with a glorious white mantle from their shoulders to their feet.” Life Sketches pp. 66,67.

The 144,000 and with them(up to the fulfillment of Ezekiel Nine will either receive the seal and be a part of or with the 144,000) are the first fruits of the living.

Read: Rev. 20: 5,6,14

“But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.” 6 “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.” 14 “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”

a. First necessitates a second, (i.e. a first resurrection necessitates a second; a second death necessitates a first death. (See Rev. 20:5,6,14)
b. The 144,000 are called the first fruits. They, therefore, must be the firstfruits of the living. (The first fruits of the dead represented Christ and those who came up with Him at His resurrection – (1 Corinthians 15:20).

Read: GC 665.2

“Nearest the throne are those who were once zealous in the cause of Satan, but who, plucked as brands from the burning, have followed their Saviour with deep, intense devotion. Next are those who perfected Christian characters in the midst of falsehood and infidelity, those who honored the law of God when the Christian world declared it void, and the millions, of all ages, who were martyred for their faith. And beyond is the “great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, . . . before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.” Revelation 7:9.” The Great Controversy p.665.2

This account brings to view four groups or categories of saints.

a. First Group: “plucked as brands”
b. Second Group: “Those who perfected Christian characters…”
c. Third Group: “millions…Who were martyred…”
d. Fourth Group: “The great multitude”

Note: Inspiration singles out the great multitude. They are separated from the three other groups. Thus, they could not be the dead from all ages.

Why the Great Multitude can’t taste death?

Read: Rev. 7:10-14

7:10 “And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.”
7:11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
7:12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
7:13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
a. Here we see that the great Multitude live and endure the Great tribulation, which takes place prior to the plagues.

Read: Revelation 7:16

Revelation 7:16 “They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.”

a. They are not affected by the 4th plague —the sun lighting on them (see Rev. 16: 8-9; Great Controversy 649). Therefore, if they live through the 4th plague, then they must live through all of them and will be translated at Christ’s Second Advent. Thus, they will not taste death.

“And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat,…” Revelation 16:8,9.

Here we are clearly shown that the great multitude are still here during the fourth plague, the plague of heat.

Revelation 7:11 “And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,”

a. This verse shows that probation has not yet closed. Notice that the beasts, the twenty-four elders are still in the sanctuary indicating that the judgment is still in progress and that the plagues have not yet fallen (Rev. 15: 1-3, 7-8) and that the Great Multitude have been sealed. But, they are represented as standing before the throne (Rev. 7:9). This is also exemplified by the case of E.G. White’s vision recorded in EW 54-55, 92.

A. Type

I. Enoch is a type of a class of saints who will be translated without tasting death.

II. He was not an Israelite (he lived before Jacob – the father of the nation of Israel).

III. He bore a palm. (EW 40).

“Then I was taken to a world which had seven moons. There I saw good old Enoch, who had been translated. On his right arm he bore a glorious palm, and on each leaf was written “Victory.” Early Writings p.41.

Revelation 7:9 “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;”

B. Antitype

I. Revelation 7:9 – the Great Multitude are not Israelites but from all nations, kindred.

II. They have palms.

III. They must be living saints as the 144,000.

Where Does the Company In Verse Nine Come From?

“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;” Revelation 7:9.

Read: Rev 14:4

“These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.” Revelation 14:4

a. The 144,000 are called the “First-fruits”—evidently they are the first ones to be spiritually harvested—saved from among the living. Note, that one cannot have a first without a second, one necessitates the other. (For an example, see Rev. 20:5—“The first resurrection” or Rev.20:14—“The second death”). So, the Great Multitude in verse 9 must be the second fruits brought in by the 144,000, the first fruits.

Read: Isaiah 66:15-20

Isaiah 66:15 “For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.”

a. Verse 15 shows us that the Lord comes to bring judgment upon many.

b. This could not be the second coming of Christ, because verse 16 says that He “pleads.” There is no pleading at the second coming. (See 2T 691)

Isaiah 66:16 “For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.”

Isaiah 66:17 “They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.”

Isaiah 66:18 “For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.”

Isaiah 66:19 “And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.”

b. Verse 19 clearly shows that some escape the judgment and are sent as missionaries to preach the gospel world-wide. This again shows that this coming was not the second advent as no one will escape to preach the gospel.

c. Therefore, the judgment of verse 15 must be the same as the slaughter of Ezekiel 9, and those who escape must be the 144,000 and with them who in turn go out to finish the gospel and gather in the Great Multitude of Rev. 7:9.

Isaiah 66:20 “And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD.”

CONCLUSION:

Thus we see that Rev. 7 clearly forecasts that the 144,000 and with them must be sealed before the Mark of the Beast Decree, and that the Gospel will be completed during the time of the Sunday Laws. Now is the time to sigh (reform our own lives) and cry (warn others). We have seen that God is first to seal a remnant from His remnant church, and will use them as His consecrated “servants” to proclaim the last message of mercy by calling His people out of Babylon and bringing in a Great Multitude. Thus, at our Lord’s return, there will a church made up of millions of living saints awaiting translation. This last great proclamation of the gospel is to far supersede that of the days of the Apostles.
